Sabotaged fibre cables in Kenya led to a major internet blackout in Uganda this week, with some users left unable to connect for hours.
According to the New Vision website, fibre leads that connect the country to undersea cables were cut on the Kenyan side.
This caused a double failure, affecting both the TEAMS link and the back-up EASSY cable, which is operated by telecoms firm MTN.
Themba Khumalo, chief of the company, said fibre cable damage is becoming an increasingly common occurrence in Kenya.
"There seems to be a problem with fibre," he remarked. "There is suspected sabotage going on."
Mr Khumalo said MTN is now considering using the Tanzanian route for fibre cables to avoid relying too heavily on Kenyan infrastructure.
Meanwhile, TeleGeography has reported that i3 Africa is planning to build a new fibre-to-the-home network that will connect up to 2.5 million homes in South Africa in the next four to five years.
