Internet service provider BT has launched a third trial of its fibre optic cable broadband technology.
The company has chosen Glasgow's Halfway area as the site for the latest test run.
BT will operate the fibre optic lead internet technology until April 2010.
The technology will give people and businesses in the area access to download speeds of up to 40Mbps.
Upload speeds will be a more modest 2Mbps.
BT business managing director Bill Murphy said: "Our three super-fast broadband trials will mean businesses can tell us just how they want to use the services and allow us to work out what is possible in practice."
Last month, BT's fibre optic broadband plans were supported by IT research firm Point Topic, which claimed that the company's decision to expand its installation programme was a major shift in policy.
However, Point Topic's chief analyst Tim Johnson said that without government support the technology will fail to reach rural areas.
