Businesses in Southend which use fibre cables are set to receive superfast internet access thanks to BT's rollout of the technology.
The Essex Echo reported that the town will have access to download speeds of up to 40Mbps, with the possibility of this rising to 60Mbps in the future.
James Duddfridge MP told the newspaper: "I am delighted Southend is one of the first areas in the UK to benefit from this new broadband.
"This will be beneficial to householders and businesses. I look forward to the broadband being available to constituents across Rochford and other areas in the constituency in due course."
The move comes as part of the telecoms giant's £2.5 billion investment in fibre optic technology, which it plans to roll out to around two-thirds of the UK's homes and businesses by 2015.
Meanwhile, the town of Hinckley in the Midlands has seen Virgin Media's ultrafast 100Mbps fibre optic broadband service go live.
