A new fibre optic lead broadband network in South Yorkshire has gone live.
Thales UK and Digital Region joined forces to create a high-speed £90 million network that will allow some 97 per cent of businesses in the region to connect to it.
The two companies are promising a guaranteed connection speeds of 25Mbps and above and the first residents in the area could be using the service as soon as 2010.
Using similar fibre optic cable technology to that used by BT.
Thales UK chief executive officer Alex Dorrian said: "The 'Go-live' of our core network marks a step-change for businesses, local authorities and homes alike, throughout the whole of South Yorkshire.
"It is no overstatement to say that the entire community stands to benefit from this super-fast broadband network."
Meanwhile, David Holt, chief executive officer of Digital Region, said the project is truly groundbreaking and will provide a wealth of opportunity for local businesses.
BT recently launched its third fibre optic trial in Glasgow's Halfway area.
