SMEs need fibre optic leadsThe government's Small Business Service claims that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make up 97 per cent of the British economy and for many, high-speed internet access is a luxury, according to Computer Weekly.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Small Businesses has attacked government plans to introduce nationwide 2Mbps broadband, calling them unambitious.

According to the Computer Weekly, copper cabling can only push data rates up to a maximum of 50Mbps, and fibre optic leads are required if higher speeds are to be achieved.

"If the government really is serious about ensuring businesses have access to high-speed broadband, it should regulate the service, imposing hefty penalties on network providers who have frequent outages, and force them to compensate small businesses," the website noted.

Meanwhile, plans for high speed fibre optic cable connections for residents in Glasgow have been brought forward by BT.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19327561-ADNFCR
