Scientists make fibre cable breakthrough - Network Cables

Scientists make fibre cable breakthrough - Network CablesScientists have managed to create fibre optic connections that can deliver data at a record speed of 40 gigabits per second using a surface emitting laser.

The technology is faster, cheaper and more energy efficient than the conventional lasers currently used in most fibre cables.

The team, from Chalmers University in Sweden, said their research could have uses in consumer electronics, as well as local networks and data centres.

Professor Anders Larsson explained: "The market for this technology is gigantic.

"In the huge data centres that handle the internet there are today over one hundred million surface emitting lasers.

"That figure is expected to increase a hundredfold."

The light from a surface laser is emitted from the surface of the laser chip as opposed to the edge, as it is in a light emitting diode.

Professor Larsson and his team were able to increase the speed of a surface emitting laser around four-fold during their research.
