A business partnership in Teesdale has applied for funding so that it can introduce fibre optic cable broadband infrastructure to the area.
The Teesdale Action Partnership has taken the action after a Point Topic research paper showed that just 12.3 per cent of people in the region had access to next-generation internet services, reports the Teesdale Mercury.
Speaking to an audience at the most recent Teesdale Action Partnership meeinting, Charlotte Stow, of Teesdale and Wear Valley Enterprise Agency, said: "Businesses are hanging on while they wait for us to find a solution and many businesses have moved out of the dale because they can't get broadband in Teesdale."
She added that as well as impacting on local businesses, the lack of high-speed fibre optic lead broadband technology was also having an impact on both residents and schools.
Earlier this year Yorkshire Forward announced that it had attracted £90 million worth of investment for its high-speed broadband initiative in and around Sheffield.
