Data centre operators and businesses running local area networks (LANs) may find that OM4 fibre cables best fit their requirements.
Michael Crane, editor of Network Communications News, explained that the OM4 solution is a multimode fibre with a high quality core.
This means it is ideal for multiple applications, such as backbone connections in enterprise LANs and data centre environments.
"It is the best platform available for the transmission of 10Gb Ethernet and now 40Gb and 100Gb Ethernet," he remarked.
"As the demand for ever more bandwidth and higher speeds continues to grow at a rapid pace, the latest fibre cables will be more important than ever."
Mr Crane's comments come after researchers at Chalmers University in Sweden used a surface emitting laser to create fibre optic connections that are capable of delivering data at a record speed of 40 gigabits per second.
They claimed that the technology is faster, cheaper and more energy efficient that the conventional lasers than are used in most existing fibre cables.
