Manchester City Council has announced it will enable the first section of its fibre to the premises open broadband network.
The new service will provide the Oxford Road area of the city with a fast internet connection over fibre optic leads.
Commenting on the project, which was first announced a year ago, Manchester's executive member for the environment councillor Neil Swannick said: "If Manchester's economy is to continue to grow then it is vital that we have accessible and affordable super-fast broadband."
He added that the state-of-the-art capabilities of fibre optic cables will ensure the Next Generation Digital City project will deliver on its promises.
Mr Swannick claimed that fibre to the home projects in European cities such as Paris and Berlin pose a direct threat to the British economy.
According to Victor Keegan, writer for the Guardian, Gordon Brown's mantra should be "bandwidth, bandwidth, bandwidth".
