Japanese earthquake damaged undersea fibre cables - Network Cables

Japanese earthquake damaged undersea fibre cables - Network CablesThe earthquake that struck Japan last week, triggering a tsunami that caused devastation along the country's coast, also resulted in damage to undersea fibre cables bringing internet and phone services to several Asian countries.

Companies including Chunghwa Telecom, China Unicom and KDDI have reported outages and disruption since the natural disaster occurred on Friday March 11th.

Telephone lines and internet connections have been affected in Japan, China and Taiwan, with operators now eager to assess the extent of the damage to the fibre cable infrastructure beneath the Pacific Ocean.

"We don't know if the cable has been cut, or if it's a connection problem," a spokesman for Japanese telecoms firm KDDI told the Wall Street Journal.

"We won't know what the problem I exactly until we pull up the cable and check the damaged part."

The earthquake occurred at 14:46 local time and measured 8.9 on the Richter scale.
