Japan planning fibre cable repairs - Network Cables

Japan planning fibre cable repairs - Network CablesTelecoms operators in Japan are waiting for earthquake aftershocks to cease before they can carry out repairs to undersea fibre cables.

Earlier this week, it was reported that significant damage to the subsea cable network had been caused by the tsunami that hit Japan on Friday March 11th.

According to the BBC, affected providers have been keeping the country connected using backup cables to reroute telephone and internet traffic.

KDDI, the second largest telecoms firm in Japan, is preparing to send out remote-controlled robots capable of diving to 2,500 metres to repair its cables once aftershocks subside. The delicate process could take months to complete.

A spokesman for the company explained that to robots were originally used to lay the cables on the seabed. However, they have never been used for major repairs.

The earthquake that rocked Japan last week measured 9.0 on the Richter scale and strong aftershocks continue to be felt, reaching magnitudes of around 6.0 and beyond in some cases.
