Internet Protocol (IP) and ethernet-based protocols are increasing their share in the storage networking market, ComputerWeekly has reported.
Research conducted by analyst firm IDC suggests the western European storage market was worth £3.7 billion in 2006, with just £38.9 million of this sector value being accounted for by small computer system interface (iSCSI) - the most notable of IP-based storage networking protocols - storage area networks (Sans).
However, IDC is of the belief that average annual growth in total storage outlay will grow by two per cent a year between 2005 and 2010 compared with a 69 per cent compound augmentation in the iSCSI Sans expenditure.
As a result, iSCSI is tipped to comprise around eight per cent of total storage spend by 2010, in contrast to the one per cent level recorded last year.
Meanwhile, iSCSI purchases will make up 15 per cent of total spending in Sans in western Europe by the beginning of the next decade, IDC claims.
