Intel working on new cabling project

Intel working on new cabling projectIntel is reported to be developing a single optical cable to handle a wide variety of tasks.

The computing giant is working on the project, codenamed Light Peak, which aims to offer speeds of 10Gbps over lengths of up to 100 metres, reports IT Pro.

Dadi Perlmutter, general manager of Intel architecture, claims the new network cable can offer speeds much faster than even a USB 3.0, which currently promises 3Gbps of data transfer.

He added the cables would have multiple protocols to be used for connection for storage, local area networking or displays.

Mr Perlmuter said it was a long-term project as "legacy takes a long time to make a transition".

He added: "USB has replaced a lot of connectors. Today a single USB connects you to a printer, to all sorts of devices. This takes it one step further."

Cabling manufacturer Belden recently launched a new Cat6 cabling solution which is claims is more environmentally-friendly than alternatives on the market.
