Intel is developing a new range of fibre optic leads designed to transmit high-definition video, data traffic and audio down a single lead.
Code named Light Peak, the new fibre optic cable solution will be made available later next year and is expected to be compatible with mainstream devices such as laptops, TVs and docking stations.
The cabling will be capable of data transmission at rates of up to 10Gbps.
Commenting on the new technology, Dadi Perlmutter, the executive vice president of the Intel Architecture Group, said that the new cabling would bring an end to the tangle of wires used to connect home networking devices.
The new technology is also capable of running multiple network protocols simultaneously.
Meanwhile, BT is preparing for the commercial roll-out of its fibre optic broadband service.
The company expects to have 1.5 million subscribers by the summer of next year, and ten million subscribers by 2012.
