Fibre optic leads 'less secure' - Fibre Leads Fibre optic cables are more susceptible to attack than previously believed, it has been claimed.

According to a new report by IDC, hackers can easily tap into fibre optic leads and eavesdrop on transmitted data.

The industry research firm stated that claims that fibre optic networking equipment is more secure than standard Cat5 and Cat6 cables is unjustified.

IDC research analyst Romain Fouchereau said that big businesses such as financial institutions are particularly vulnerable if they do not take precautions.

He told IT Pro: "Organisations in the financial, insurance, healthcare, and government sectors deliver sensitive information across fibre optic cables."

"Industrial espionage in these sectors is worth billions of dollars," he added.

Meanwhile, a new report on the future of fibre optic cabling will be launched this autumn by industry analyst CIR.

The company will investigate the potential of fibre optic networking in small and large businesses as well as in the home for theatre and high definition TV purposes.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19296272-ADNFCR
