High-speed Ethernet over standard network cabling is suitable for a wide range of data centre applications and offers businesses competitive price and performance as well as simplified network equipment layout, it has been claimed.
Gigabit Ethernet is more than adequate for standard local area networks over Cat5 and Cat6 cables, but it has a lot to offer data centres, reports Search Networking.
The website states that while the 10Gbit data transfer system cannot compete with high-end InfiniBand rates, it is adequate for most data centre purposes.
It claims: "Replacement of fibre channel and InfiniBand with Ethernet results in cost savings and added flexibility.
"Fibre channel and InfiniBand are specialised technologies connecting servers and storage. Neither can extend beyond the data centre."
One firm extending its current Ehternet network in the UK is Luxembourg-based Colt Telecom Group.
The firm claims increased demand from small and medium sized businesses is driving the expansion.
