Expert: Fibre-optic cables reliable but need encryption

Expert: Fibre-optic cables reliable but need encryptionFibre-optic cables have been known as the most reliable and most secure form of data transfer for many years.

A recent report from research from IDC said that for decades the cables have been known as the fastest and best form of data transfer, but they are not without their problems.

The study said that tapping and hacking techniques have become very sophisticated, meaning likely targets for data theft may need to ensure their security systems are fully up-to-date.

IDC advised that data encryption is the simplest and most effective way to transfer the information.

However, fibre-optic cables are still popular, with half of broadband users saying they should form the basis of the UK's next generation network.

The research from ISPreview.co.uk of 400 British web users found that the cables are preferred for the new 2MB broadband plans, outlined by the government recently in the Digital Britain report.
