Emulex and QLogic is to start distributing its 8Gbit/s Fibre Channel (FC) components for storage area networks (SANs) early next year, it has been reported.
The move will see the storage equipment vendors double their throughput compared with their existing 4Gbit/s FC offering.
According to Mike Smith, Emulex executive president of worldwide marketing, the new product will prove to be particularly popular - despite an expected higher price.
"Virtually every major original equipment manufacturer will migrate [to 8Gbit/s FC] over time. Emulex does not set end-user pricing but I would expect a price premium of about 20 per cent [over 4Gbit/s components]," he told IT Week.
The new 8Gbit/s Fibre Channel components will be compatible with their 4Gbit/s and 2Gbit/s forebears, but not 1Gbit/s ¬FC SANs.
Meanwhile, QLogic is also working on SAN switches and an iSCSI-to-8Gbit/s FC router - reportedly for Cisco - which are also set to be introduced imminently.
