Cumbrians in Alston Moor are digging their own trenches for high-speed fibre optic cable broadband.
The village has only had broadband internet access from BT for the past four years, but local campaigners have clubbed together to create Cybermoor a local high-speed broadband action group, reports the Sunday Times.
Cybermoor has already provided internet users with speeds of up to 10Mbps via a network of radio transmitters in the region, but now plans to lay fibre optic leads to double connection speeds, the paper states.
Jeremy Higgs, owner of Pennine Ways estate agent in Alston, told the news provider: "Just last month we let a property to a lady who works from home and needs broadband. She wouldn't be here without it."
Meanwhile, a business partnership in Teesdale has applied for funding so that it can introduce fibre optic broadband in the area.
The Teesdale Action Partnership made the application after it found that businesses were moving out of the region because they could not get reliable internet connections.
