Contractors damage fibre-optic cablesPeople living in the south and west of Doha, Qatar's capital city, experienced disruption to mobile phone and data services on Thursday after workmen accidentally severed six fibre-optic cables in Al Rayan, it has been reported.

Services were gradually brought back online over the course of the afternoon as an emergency response unit was drafted in to mend the fibre leads, according the Peninsula newspaper.

Adel Al Mutawa, executive director of group communication with Qtel, praised the work of the team which carried out the repairs.

"The emergency response team demonstrated their effectiveness with their swift response to the problem and the restoration of communication services," he remarked.

In other news related to fibre leads, a number of telephone cables were stolen this week in Chandigarh, India.

The Hindu Business Line quoted BSNL's general manager Naresh Sharma as saying that as many as 800 telephones have been affected and that it could take up to a week for services to be fully restored.
