Cat 6 'allows networks to breathe'

Cat 6 'allows networks to breathe'People considering buying new network cables should avoid trying to save money by purchasing Cat 5e cables and opt for Cat 6, one industry figure has claimed.

Gordon Laing, from What PC?, believes those buying leads should choose the Cat 6 as it will prove more useable for future upgrades.

Also, Mr Laing said buying a gigabit switch could improve network speeds, after he acquired one which saw his performance increase from an average of 40Mbits/sec to 200Mbits/sec.

"If you're buying new network cables … I wouldn't skimp with older Cat 5e, as Cat 6 will give your network more room to breathe should you upgrade to 10 gigabit in the future," he stated.

Meanwhile, ensuring adapters are running their latest drivers and enabling Jumbo packets on frames can also be beneficial to improving network speeds, Mr Laing added.

In other news, XO Communications recently announced the University of Memphis has begun using its gigabit network cables to expand internet connectivity for students and staff.
