Network equipment contractors working on Wales' high-speed broadband offering have not been paid for work they have already carried out.
Work on the £30 million project could be at risk as a result of the no payment, it has been claimed.
According to Tech Watch, some sub contracting firms working on the project, which will see 200 miles of fibre optic cables laid from Holyhead to Manchester, are owed as much as £250,000.
Meanwhile, smaller individual contractors are owed sums in the region of £17,000.
The tech-news website claims that the main players in the high-speed networking project, Geo and North Midlands Construction are investigating the problem.
Commenting on the project, Ieuan Wyn Jones, Plaid Cymru leader and economy minister, said: "I am confident these services will improve the commercial options available to Welsh businesses.
He predicted that FibreSpeed could boost the Welsh economy by £29 each year for the next ten years.
