Michael Crane, editor of Network Communications News, said it is important to look at exactly what the company requires, instead of getting carried away with new technology.

He explained that investing in fibre cables may be a sound investment for businesses that need high-end speed and performance, such as financial institutions,

However, he added: "It is pointless spending the budget on an all-singing, all-dancing fibre optic system if there is no need for it.

"I would take time to look at the fibre optic cabling options available and ask an installer or specifier what the best fit would be."

Mr Crane's comments come after scientists in Sweden made a fibre cable breakthrough using surface emitting lasers to deliver data at a record speed of 40 gigabits per second.
