BT's renewed commitment to providing more UK residents with broadband based on the latest fibre optic lead technology will not impact on rival firms' internet service provision plans, it has been claimed.
According to ISPreview.co.uk, firms will not change their policies toward the expansion of fibre opticnetwork equipment in the UK unless they are offered support from central government.
Commenting on BT's target of having 2.5 million households connected to its network in the coming years, Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief of the website, said: "BT's move is unlikely to encourage rival operators to invest in super-fast broadband any more than they already are. Most of BT's rivals are already using cost-saving methods."
He added that many firms are planning to use existing infrastructure, such as sewer pipes, to house their fibre optic leads.
BT's plans to connect 2.5 million households to its fibre-to-the-home network will give roughly ten per cent of the UK population access to high-speed broadband.
