BT is planning on trialling more fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) fibre optic cable technology on brown field sites in London and Milton Keynes.
The company will expand its fibre optic lead coverage with a Bradwell Abbey network in Milton Keynes.
Meanwhile, Highams Park in London has been chosen for a trial which will see as many as 20,000 homes able to connect to the internet at speeds of up to 100Mbps.
David Campbell, managing director of next generation access at Openreach, said: "This trial is crucial for informing our plans to consider deploying [FTTH] alongside fibre-to-the-cabinet."
He added that businesses should consider getting involved in the FTTH trials being carried out across the country as soon as possible.
Last month BT announced that by 2012 it hopes to have ten million subscribers to its fibre optic broadband offering.
The company added that by the end of next year it should have 1.5 million subscribers already on its books.
