IT research firm Point Topic has been commended BT for its fibre Optic lead broadband plans.
The organisation said that the most recent proposals put forward by BT would more than double the number of high-speed broadband connections available to the public.
Tim Johnson, chief analyst at research body Point Topic, said that the move marks a major shift in the firm's fibre optic cable policy.
However, he added that more rural parts of the UK would not benefit from next-generation broadband without publicly funded backing.
"[Next generation broadand] will not reach more remote areas without subsidy. And [these areas] are not terribly remote, they are only mildly remote," he said.
According to ISPreview.co.uk, BT's new broadband commitments will not have a significant impact on other operators' own fibre optic cable proposals and the website claimed other operators will need support from central government if they too are to expand their plans.
