BT has revised its next generation broadband projections and is hoping that twice as many people will be connected to its fibre optic lead infrastructure than previously thought.
The firm said that by 2012, as many as 2.5 million households will have access to the new technology approximately 10 per cent of UK homes.
Originally BT was planning to connect just one million homes to the next generation network.
Steve Robertson, the head of BT Openreach, said: "As we step forward, we are more confident about the direction of our strategy. We are willing to be aggressive."
Last week, BT announced that it was planning on trialling more fibre-to-the-home broadband technology projects on brown field sites in London and Milton Keynes.
The firm said that in Highams Park, London, residents could see as many as 20,000 homes connected to fibre optic leads capable of data transmission speeds of up to 100Mbps.
