Fibre optic
network equipment could be expanded indefinitely to provide ever greater bandwidth, it has been claimed.
According to ZDNet, many businesses are already using 1Gbps connections to connect their offices, and with JANET the UK's first National Research and Education Network having already broken the 1Gbps barrier over a transmission distance of 103km, terabyte bandwidths could be closer than expected.
Writing for the tech-news website, industry expert David Braue said: "Supporting millions of households at gigabit speeds would be technically difficult/impossible/expensive (choose your option), but with new core network equipment enabling a tenfold boost in carriers' capacity over existing fibre, it could very well be done."
He added that Cisco demonstrated 100Gbps transmission technologies more than a year ago.
Earlier this month, Siemon launched a new range of plug and play fibre optic leads with tailored turnkey connectors that it claimed are 75 per cent quicker to install than traditional leads.
