Fibre optic access recommendations from Ofcom - Network Cables

Fibre optic access recommendations from Ofcom - Network CablesOfcom has announced new proposals for the regulation of the broadband industry that could have an impact of the rollout of fibre cables.

In an effort to get superfast broadband services around the country, the organisation has said that competitors should be allowed to use BT's telegraph poles and underground ducts to lay their own fibre cables in them.

According to Ofcom, up to 50 per cent of these routes have enough space for more cables and the company would have to indicate where these spaces are.

In addition to this, it has been recommended that competitors should also have access to BT's own fibre cables for their own services, although they would have to pay for this.

Ofcom's chief executive Ed Richards said: "Ofcom's proposed regulatory framework is intended to support the next phase of [broadband] development by promoting investment, competition and innovation for consumers across the UK."

Fibre optic broadband services are already available from a number of operators, including Virgin Media, and BT had recently announced that it would be happy to let competitors have access to its infrastructure.
