Fibre cable broadband the 'real hope' - Network Cables

Fibre cable broadband the 'real hope' - Network CablesFibre cable provision will be more important to the digital economy than universal 2Mb services, according to a broadband expert.

Plans for universal broadband by 2012 were recently shelved, with the target pushed back to the end of the current parliament in 2015.

However, Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, explained why the provision of fibre cable broadband would be more important to the digital economy.

"There may still be hope for a more solid future, as the 2Mb target was almost not worth having as it was just a short-term sticking plaster anyway. The real hope for the long-term is in universal fibre broadband provision," he said.

"It's not come as any real surprise to most industry watchers that the 2012 target has been scrapped. I would say the writing's been on the wall for a long time on this issue."

Speeds of up to 100Mb are currently being tested over fibre cables, while Virgin Media recently launched a trial to lay the cables over existing electricity poles.
