Conservatives 'tout broadband for all'

Conservatives 'tout broadband for all'Conservative Party leader David Cameron has announced that the entire country will be connected to a high-speed broadband network within ten years.

The Tory leader said that half of the country would be connected in five years.

"In Britain we have some of the slowest broadband speeds in the developed world and when it comes to investing in next generation broadband networks, like fibre optics to the home, we're doing very badly," he said.

Mr Cameron said the Conservatives would appoint a broadband specialist to encourage telecoms firms to invest in Britain's next-generation fibre optic network and made it clear the government would not bankroll development of the relevant infrastructure.

In related news, Edinburgh University professor Christopher Bishop said fibre optic technology could help Britain recover from the ongoing economic downturn more quickly.

He said the first step is to improve the UK's cabling infrastructure so it can compete in the global marketplace.ADNFCR-1186-ID-18960429-ADNFCR
