Australia to expand fibre cable broadband - Network Cables

Australia to expand fibre cable broadband - Network CablesThe Australian government has announced plans to improve the country's broadband infrastructure with the installation of fibre cables.

According to the AFP news agency, prime minister Julia Gillard said the fibre network would be expanded to a further 3000,000 homes under her leadership.

"The objective for the fibre and superfast broadband has now lifted from 90 per cent of Australian households to 93 per cent," she stated.

Under current government plans, all residents, including those living in remote outback areas will have faster broadband access by 2017.

The latest expansion of the infrastructure would require 6,000 kilometres, or 3,720 miles, of fibre cabling, the country's communications minister revealed.

"For too long, Australians living in remote and regional Australia have had to put up with expensive and slow broadband," said Stephen Conroy.

Australia was recently ranked 50th in a lost of global broadband connection speeds, behind Britain, the US and South Korea, which took first place.
