An Australian network equipment firm is hoping to revolutionise audio-video cabling set ups, it has been claimed.
According to ZDNet's Brad Howarth, Audinate is hoping to replace the standard analogue cabling used in many stereo and home cinema set-ups with TCP/IP leads based on computer networking technology.
The new cabling would also greatly simplify recording at concerts or in stadiums, where huge amounts of equipment need to be connected together, including microphones, amplifiers, mixers and many more.
Chief technology officer of Audinate Aidan Williams said the task is not an easy one as TCP/IP was never designed for real-time transmission.
He told ZDNet: "We are talking latency that is 20 times less than is acceptable in Voice over IP."
Mr Howarth concluded that this is just not acceptable for audio applications, with minor delays or disruption to signals posing difficult problems.
Last month, Netgear launched a series of digital switches aimed at audio professionals.
The company teamed up with Harman International to create the device.
