10Gbit Ethernet 'more cost effective than Fibre'

10Gbit Ethernet 'more cost effective than Fibre'Ethernet and standard SAS cabling is more cost effective than fibre optic technology for networking and storage, it has been claimed.

In Search Storage's list of what will be hot and what will not in 2009, fibre optic networking solutions lose out to their standard cabling counterparts as the latter provide better value for money.

Brad Booth, president and chairman of the Ethernet Alliance said that the technology has progressed and is used for more than just local area networks.

Meanwhile, analysts believe the cost of 10Gbit Ethernet will drop in price in 2009 making it even more difficult for fibre optic technology to gain a foot hold, according to the tech-news website.

Another technology failing to perform to its potential in 2009 will be green storage.

Search Storage claims that the only way the industry will adhere to green solutions is if they provide concrete savings and green technology works itself "more tightly" into storage products.

Meanwhile, IBM has helped Highmark optimise its green datacentre.ADNFCR-1186-ID-18956269-ADNFCR
