PoE 'useful for many applications'

PoE 'useful for many applications'The benefits of using Power over Ethernet (PoE) with technologies such as voice over internet protocol (VoIP) have been highlighted.

Writing on cieonline.co.uk, Daniel Feldman, senior product line manager at Microsemi, points out that by the start of the century the evolution of the communications system meant the Ethernet needed to be able to allow VoIP to be easy to use.

In addition, Mr Feldman noted that wireless LAN protocols were becoming sophisticated enough to take over some applications which relied on network cables.

However, he explained that after the PoE standard was introduced users had the option to use their network cables to power a range of items, including VoIP handsets, network cameras, barcode RFID readers and access control applications.

Mr Feldman added: "Power over Ethernet is now geared towards transforming the RJ45connector into the universal power socket."

Earlier this month, product manager at Transition Networks Curt Carlson wrote on Communications News that using the correct network cables can boost the performance of video security systems.
