Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei Technologies is to lay fibre leads to extend a fibre-optic network in Zambia.
The project will see the Zambia Telecommunications (Zamtel) national network extended over ten routes throughout the country, while further work will be carried out on the Lusaka Metropolitan fibre-optic project, IDG reports.
Commenting on the move, Charles Kachikoti, public relations manager for Zamtel, said fibre leads had already been laid in some areas and equipment had been set up in six stations.
"While the national fibre-optic backbone will be ready in 2009, the Lusaka Metropolitan fibre-optic project will be ready for use by corporate clients in the capital, Lusaka, by the end of this year," he remarked.
The two projects are expected to cost $48 million (£27.70 million) and will boost the country's bandwidth.
Last week, Huawei announced that it had signed a new agreement with Telus to provide radio access network technology for the company's new wireless network.
