Fibre leads are a better alternative to copper wire, it has been reported.
Writing for TMCnet, Commentator Rajani Baburajan said networks comprised of fibre leads can span long distances between local phone systems.
They can also provide a high-speed backbone for many network systems.
Ms Baburajan explained: "They have greater bandwidth and more resistance to electromagnetic noise such as radios, motors or other nearby cables. They are much more cost effective than copper."
The report revealed that Alaska-based telecoms firm General Communication has recently introduced its Xtreme Internet service to Ketchikan customers to boost the region's internet network speeds.
Fibre optic cabling will stretch from Seattle to South central Alaska and the investment is reported to be worth some $33 million (£21.1 million).
Meanwhile, it was reported by AME Info last week that network switch manufacturer Cisco has completed another expansion deal in the Middle East.
The firm will supply internet solutions to Saudi finance firm Derayah.
