Fibre cables planned for Africa

Fibre cables planned for AfricaThe introduction of fibre leads in Africa is expected to provide greater choice for users on the continent.

A new report titled 2008 Africa – Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Western Region notes that new submarine fibre opticcables over the next two years will deliver direct access to fibre-based international bandwidth to some regions for the first time, Report Buyer states.

It is thought that the new fibre leads will provide an alternative to SAT-3/WASC, which is currently the only international fibre available on the West African coast.

Meanwhile, countries in the region are also choosing to introduce national fibre optic backbone networks.

In related news, IDG News reports that Zambia Telecommunications has employed the services of Huawei Technologies to install fibre leads across its national network.

Additionally, the Chinese firm is extending the Lusaka Metropolitan fibre-optic project.

The news provider notes that both projects are expected to cost approximately $48 million (£28.2 million).
