The size of the UK's data centre industry is unsurprising, according to one leading industry expert. It is estimated that data and server racks cover 7.6 million square metres in the country - which is the equivalent of 900 full-size football pitches.
This equates to more than two million data cabinets.
Commenting on the popularity of the UK as a data centre destination, George Rockett co-founder and chief marketing officer of DatacenterDynamics, said: "I'm not surprised by the status or size of the UK data centre market.
"When you look at the size of the operations of just a handful of organisations, you quickly get a sense of the market's scale."
DatacentreDynamics estimated the size of the sector using figures from the Global Data Center Industry Census 2011. It then created a predictive model to determine server rack demand based on location.
In energy consumption terms, the UK's entire data centre portfolio is expected to use up in the region of 6.4 GW of energy - which would be enough to power millions of homes.
Recently, the UK government announced that it would reduce spending on IT infrastructure as part of a streamlining process.
