High speed internet users may soon have to pay depending on how much they download and how much bandwidth they consume, it has been claimed.
The new tariffs may replace existing flat rate service fees which offer unlimited connection time, according to redorbit.com.
Network equipment which allows internet service providers to monitor downloads has caused many to design and test metered access billing schemes, similar to those used by mobile phone companies, the website stated.
Meanwhile, Forrester Research senior analyst Bobby Tulsiani told MSNBC: "If you wanted to watch TV over the Internet in 2000, you had to be willing to take much less content than cable."
"Now you get much, much more. Of course, you're still watching on your PC, not your TV, so there are tradeoffs, but they are tradeoffs many people are willing to make, he added.
BT has just launched a new broadband and phone package which combines BT Total Broadband Option 1 and BT's One Plan call package.
