Powering servers 'can be less complex' - Power Leads and Extentions Powering hundreds of servers in a data centre can be made less complicated by using a two-stage distribution technique, it has been claimed.

According to Gary Anderson, marketing manager for AC power systems at Emerson Network Power, a two-stage system uses a server rack mounted power distribution unit, which can power an entire rack but needs connecting by just one power lead.

"Each cabinet connects to the 208V PDU with one cable and then distributes power to individual server racks. So, you have fewer cables to buy and install," he said.

Mr Anderson added that fewer cables – including power and RJ45 leads - could result in improved air flow within a data centre and therefore reduced power consumption.

The server cabinets do not house a transformer, so there is only a small amount of power loss in the connecting cables, he concluded.
