Data centres will be under constant threat from power shortages and space issues throughout 2009, it has been claimed.
According to Thesaurus, which provides network equipment deployment and network design services, consolidation of servers and energy efficiency are no longer "a tick in the green box" but a necessity.
The issues need to be seriously considered if a company is to avoid server downtime and failure, claims the company's chief executive officer Mike Vinten.
He said that as server racks and server cabinets in data centres are filled with ever more demanding hardware and cooling systems, the energy crisis will become more prominent and affect locations across the UK and Europe.
"Companies can plan for the energy crisis now by decommissioning older, power-hungry servers that are only partially utilised and consolidate workloads elsewhere," he added.
Server racks and cabinets are often overlooked when designing data centre architecture, according to speakers at the American Society of Heating, Refrigiration and Air-conditioning Engineers conference.
