The network attached storage market is expected to see continued growth in the coming years as home network users demand extra storage space.
According to ABI Research, network storage will be the fastest growing core home networking category over the next five years.
The organisation predicts that the global network storage market will be worth just over $1.4 billion (£700 million) by 2012, up from around $400 million (£200 million) today.
"We think overall adoption of consumer network storage will grow significantly from the ten per cent of home network owners today who use network attached storage," said ABI's research director Michael Wolf.
He pointed out that increasing numbers of consumers are likely to need more backup and central storage for digital files in the future and the network attached storage market will be there to meet the demand.
According to Digital Arts Online, network attached storage is essential for small to medium-sized businesses as it allows them to share projects and files in one centrally-accessed place.
