Cisco develops new mega-router

Cisco develops new mega-routerCisco has announced that it has developed a new mega-router to help cope with the increasing traffic caused by video-based communications.

The technology firm has launched details of the Cisco Aggregations Services Router 9000 (ASR 9000), which it claims has six times more capacity and is four times faster than any other router in its class.

According to Cisco, the ASR 9000 can run 40 per cent more efficiently than its competitors and has integrated new technology which can "proactively" manage "notoriously challenging video signals".

Praveen Akkiraju, general manager for the ASR 9000 project, said the device will be "joining the ranks of the other great Cisco routers".

He added: "The team did a great job in creating far more capacity and capability for this machine than we originally envisioned."

Cisco recently announced it was investing $100 million (£67.4 million) in a global initiative which developed communications solutions for small businesses.
