Magnetic tape storage could be making a comeback in data centres as it offers reliability, it has been claimed.
According to Enterprise Systems' Mark Ferelli, tape technology has been consigned to the history books earlier than it should have been by some industry experts and at the moment is going through something of a Renaissance.
"Tape technology is already helping to keep the data center green as utility bills rise," Mr Ferelli said.
He added that the issue of energy consumption will become a more prominent issue as electricity prices rise, but solving efficiency problems at the server level is not the only thing to consider.
Mr Ferelli concluded that efficiency is one of the largest challenges facing data centre managers today, but companies should avoid the wholesale replacement of older equipment.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, data centres are responsible for 1.5 per cent of energy consumption in the US.
